激昂ビンタ直後のウィル・スミスによるスピーチから役立つ英語表現を2つ紹介

本記事では、ウィル・スミス氏のスピーチから学べる、ポイント英語解説を行います。

ロサンゼルスで行われた第94回アカデミー賞の授賞式で、ウィル・スミス氏は主演男優賞を受賞しましたが、ウィル・スミス氏がプレゼンターをビンタするという事件が起こりました。

長編ドキュメンタリー賞のプレゼンターを務めていたコメディアンのクリス・ロック氏が、
ウィル・スミス氏の妻ジェイダ・ピンケット・スミス氏の容姿をいじるジョークを言ったことに対して、ウィル・スミス氏が壇上に上がり、クリス氏平手でビンタしました。

これは後世にも語り継がれる大きな出来事になりますね。
個人的にはメン・イン・ブラックの時からウィル・スミス氏は大好きなので、
やり方はどうあれ愛する家族を守ろうとしたウィル・スミス氏はかっこよかったです。

「the most xx people I have ever met」今まで会った人の中で最もxxな人だ

共演者への賛辞ですね。

この「I have ever ~~ 」という表現は非常に便利でして、これまで~~した中で最もxx だ、という風に比較級と合わせて使うことが多いです。

例：That was the most hard time (that) I have ever experienced.
訳：あれは自分が経験した中で最も辛いときだった。

文法的に解説すると、「hard time」という名詞に、
「I have ever experienced」という修飾句をかけています。

（that)は省略可能なので、カッコに入れておきました。

ついでに言うと後ろから名詞を修飾するのは英語でよくある表現で、よりネイティブらしく聞こえますよ。
例：This is the apple (that) I bought in the morning.
訳：これは今朝買ったリンゴだよ。

キング牧師の有名な演説も名詞を後から修飾していますね。
I have a dreamと名詞まで言い切ってから、後ろから修飾句で説明をしています。これが非常に英語らしい語順です。

日本語は基本的に前に修飾句を置くので違和感があると思いますが、英語は基本的に文の前でまず宣言をして、後から修飾句を置くケースが多いです。

「Got to ~~」~~しなければならない

In this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and pretend like that’s OK.

今回プレゼンターにネタにされてしまったことを指している一言ですね。

スピーチの中では「Gotta」と省略されていますが、分解すると「Got to」となります。
よくネイティブは「Got to」を「Gotta（ｶﾞﾀ）」と省略するのです。

Got to ~~ という表現は日常会話でめちゃくちゃ使われる表現です。
例えば、誰かと立ち話をしていてそろそろその場を去りたい時。

例：I got to go since I have a meeting at 3pm!
訳：3時にミーティングがあるからそろそろ行かなきゃ！

Have toよりGot toの方がよりカジュアルな感じがします。スラングではないですが。

私の留学先ではよくみんな「I gotta go」(ｱｲ ｶﾞﾀ ｺﾞ-)と言っていました。
最近は主語の「I」を省略することもあり、「Gotta go(ｶﾞﾀｺﾞｰ）」と言ってる人もいますね。

最初はみんな「ｶﾞﾀｺﾞｰ、ｶﾞﾀｺﾞｰ」言ってて何言ってるんだろうと思っていました。

みなさんもそろそろ遊ぶのをやめて英語の勉強をしたい時には、
I gotta study English right now!!(ｱｲ ｶﾞﾀ ｽﾀﾃﾞｨ ｲﾝｸﾞﾘｯｼｭ ﾗｲﾅｳ）と言ってみてください。

ついでに、Right nowは日本人だと「ライトナウ」と発音してしまいますが、本当は「ライナウ」です。文中の「t」は発音されないことが多いのです。Right onという服のお店ありますが、本当の発音は「ライオン」です。笑　また「Costco」も日本だと「コストコ」ですが、アメリカでは「コスコ」です。

発音も少し気をつけるだけで、格段に改善するポイントがたくさんあるので、今後もお伝えしていきますね。

Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world. Making this film, I got to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the most strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], the two actresses that play Venus and Serena. I’m being called on in my life to love people. And to protect people and to be a river to my people.I know, to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse. You gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and pretend like that’s OK.Denzel [Washington] said to me a few minutes ago, “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.” I want to be a vessel for love. I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena … and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story.That’s what I want to do. I want to be an ambassador of that kind of love and care and concern. I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me; it’s about being able to shine a light on all the people … and the entire cast and crew of King Richard and Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams!
